Losing a pet – pet loss support resources – www.marilynmilano.net Some people have said that losing a pet is the most devastating thing they’ve ever gone through. Their pet was with them day and night and now there is a huge void. Worse yet, people who aren’t that into animals, and even well meaning friends and family, often don’t get it at all. There are support groups available in many communities that can help make life after loss a little easier, and there are other resources too including some wonderful books by author Christine Davis. I volunteer at our local animal shelter for a pet loss support group. Sometimes one person shows up, sometimes there’s a group. It’s a safe environment in which people can talk about their animals, share stories and memories, and even address questions like “will I ever love again” after this. We have written materials we share, including online resources, comforting pet loss quotes and articles, and books. I also discovered, in this past year, Christine Davis’ books—”For Every Dog an Angel” and “For Every Cat an Angel”. The books are beautifully and magically illustrated, and the message is healing and comforting. Check out her website at www.lightheartedpress.com as she also has several other beautiful books. Check into possible resources in your own community and if you don’t have a pet loss support group it might be possible to start one with the help of a local animal rescue group or shelter. Question by Delilah: Do you think this is rude and/or insensitive?
7 months ago, my younger brother passed away. Needless to say, this has been a very painful and difficult time for me and my family as we grieve his loss. On three separate occasions, with 3 different people who I am acquainted with through a community organization, when I mentioned the death of my brother, not one of them said, “My condolences,” “I’m sorry for your loss.” or just, “I’m sorry.” One of the people I mentioned this to in person, and the other two via e-mail. I feel it is common courtesy, and just basic decency to at least say, “I’m sorry,” when someone tells you they lost a loved one, even if they are relative strangers. What do you think?
I want to say, “thank you” to all of you who replied here with kindness, empathy, warmth, and sensitivity to another human being’s sorrow.
