I Don’t Have “Manic Depression” Do I? Kinda Frightened?

Question by Mazzy~~*: I don’t have “manic depression” do I? Kinda frightened?
Hello. I’m 19. The past year or so has been a huge emotional roller coaster for me, and I would just like some reassurance that it’s just a normal adolescence period I’m going through.

To somewhat describe it, I’ll start with a year ago. I was pretty depressed. Very anxious at one moment, I didn’t know what to do with myself, my body, I felt like there was no escape. I wanted to just disappear from living but I didn’t want to die. The next day, I was happier than ever and thought I had just come out of a depressive feeling.

Privacy and Group Counseling?

Question by John M: Privacy and Group Counseling?
Recently during a court mandated group counseling session, a “therapist” disclosed personal information directly from my medical file to the entire group without my consent. Is this legal or ethical? Specifically, I was asked a question and responded with an answer she clearly didn’t like. She then said: “I’m curious” and then leaned over and picked up her files. After glancing through them she then stated in front of the entire group. “Yes, I see. You’ve been diagnosed as dependent on alcohol”. Needless to say, I was outraged and really let her have it. Should I bother filing a privacy violation complaint, or should I file an ethics complaint with the hospital, or should I just suck it up and be happy that I told her where to go?

Is My Mum an Alcohol?

Question by Katie: Is my mum an alcohol?
For a bit of background info, I’m 18 years old and live at home with my parents.
My mum has always liked to have a drink for as long as I can remember.
About 4 years ago my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout these few years I have noticed my mum’s drinking becoming more and more substantial.
Every night now, she will have around 2 bottles of wine. Is this abnormal?
I’m so worried about her health. I’m going to lose my dad soon, I don’t want to lose her too.
She will drink herself to sleep every night. For example, tonight we have had friends round and she has drunk 3 bottles to herself. I know that she gets so drunk that she can’t remember stuff, because she will ask me questions she asked the night before when she had been drinking.
She completely denies that she gets ‘drunk’ but we all know the truth. I have raised the issue with her on quite a few occasions, they all result in an argument.
I hate arguing with her, I care too much, so I just leave it. There is nothing I can say to make her cut down. I’m scared to actually ask her. I don’t think she thinks she has a problem.
Does she have a problem?
