“Detox” is short for “detoxify,” which means to rid of toxins, poisons. Alcohol and illegal drugs are toxins, poisons, considered toxic to people. “Cold turkey” is an idiom that means “suddenly and without help” from other drugs.

If someone quits using a harmful substance by him/herself, without a doctor’s advice or treatment, he or she is said to “detox cold turkey.”
