Psycho-This and Psycho-That…?
Question by Nurani Illahi: Psycho-this and Psycho-that…?
Can someone explain to me in thoroughly, accurately, and in clear detail what the difference between
Psychologist
Psychiatrist
Psychotherapist
Psychoanalyst is?
Best answer:
Answer by Dr. K
This is a very common question on here and very common question I get a lot.
Ok, first, let’s get the psychiatrist out of the equation. They are a medical doctor and have an M.D. (medical doctorate) degree. They go to medical school and take courses in mental health and psychology but their primary concern is prescribing medication. Think of your general doctor you go to when you are not feeling well. Psychiatrists are similar to them, but they have a lot of training in psychology and dealing with mental disorders. They generally see patients for as long as your medical doctor would see their patients; about 5-10 minutes, find out how their meds are doing and then go to the next patient. They do not do group therapy, they don’t “counsel” patients/clients on their condition and help them find ways to help themselves other than meds. They do make a hell of a lot more money because they do dabble with medications and that is a very dangerous thing to give to people. They would not be hired over a psychologist, as these are 2 totally different professionals.
Chose Masters Degree in Psychology or Counseling?
Question by Know One: Chose masters degree in psychology or counseling?
I’ll graduate with my BA in psychology next spring. I knew when I started that I would need more than a BA in psych to get a job in the field. Now I’m torn between master’s programs. Should I choose a MS in psychology or in counseling? I would prefer to find work as some sort of mental health counselor, but I’m not sure which degree opens more doors.
At my nearest state university, I can get licensed through the state by taking the counseling program because it includes enough hours of on-the-job practice with professionals to qualify for licensure. However, I don’t know if a counseling degree is as widely accepted by employers as a psych degree, and I don’t know if one offers a more varied job market than the other.

26 Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain
– an essay by Jessica Mitford
The drama begins to unfold with the arrival of the corpse at
the mortuary. Alas, poor Yorick! How surprised he would be to see how his counterpart of today is whisked off to a funeral parlor and is in short order sprayed, sliced, pierced, pickled, trussed, trimmed, creamed, waxed, painted, rouged, and neatly dressed-transformed from a common corpse into a Beautiful Memory Picture. This process is known in the trade as embalming and restorative art, and is so universally employed in the United States and Canada that the funeral
director does it routinely, without consulting corpse or kin. He regards as eccentric those few who are hardy enough to suggest that it might be dispensed with. Yet no law requires embalming, no religious doctrine commends it, nor is it dictated by considerations of health, sanitation, or even of personal daintiness. In no part of the world but
in Northern America is it widely used. The purpose of embalming is to make the corpse presentable for viewing in a suitably costly container; and here too the funeral director routinely, without first consulting the family, prepares the body for public display.
What Is the Difference Between Clinical Psychology and Counseling? You Can Get a PhD in Both?
Question by courtney: What is the difference between clinical psychology and counseling? You can get a PhD in both?
I am interested in getting my Masters Degree. I see that some online and campus universities have both of these degrees. And then you can further your education and get a PhD. Some websites even say clinical psychology/counseling, like it is the same thing.
What is the difference?

Psychology is the science of the study of the mind and how it influences thinking and behaviors. Counseling and clinical psychology are the most popular areas of study in the field of psychology.
History
Clinical psychologists work with more seriously ill mental health patients. Psychologist Raymond LLoyd Richmond, Ph.D., describes the history of the word clinical: “The word, clinic derives from the Latin clinicus, or a physician who attends patients sick in bed. Clinical psychology is concerned with the work of treating ‘sick’ patients.”
How to Become a Psychologist?
Question by Lucky: How to become a psychologist?
I am wondering, how does one become a psychologist? Like those people you see in movies where one person is laying down on a leather chair/bed thing and talking about their problems, while the “therapist” writes down notes… How does one become that? Does it takes a Masters degree, or a PHD? How many years of study does one has to do in order to become one?

By the description you provided, you are referring to ‘psychiatrist.’
Psychiatrist and psychologist are totally different profession.
If you want to pursue a type of profession as you have described above, you need to go to medical school as psychiatrist is a medical profession that deals with mental illness.
Getting masters or doctorate in psychology will NOT make you to be psychiatrist.
