If you mean “counsel,” there are such jobs. Most common is that of a probation or parole officer. In addition, there are alcoholism counselors and therapists and same for drug addicts. Some combination of criminal justice, social work and psychology seems appropriate. To be a counselor in most states requires at least a masters degree. To be a probation officer usually requires only a bachelors.

How Do I Become a Counsellor?

Question by Josefine: How do i become a counsellor?
I’m considering studying abroad (The US) I don’t know anything about Bachelor degrees or Master of Arts etc. I’ve read everything i could find but it doesn’t make any sense.

The educational system in Sweden isn’t the same as in the US and i’m currently studying “nursing” on a upper secondary level. I’m not sure what the equivalent of gymnasium is in America. But i do know that the most correct comparison to gymnasium is High School, only it’s a vocational education.

I would like to study at college or a university for an uncertain amount of time, but i don’t know how long i have to study and how to go about it. Do i need some sort of degree and if so, what or which?

Nurse Interested in Mental Health & Crisis Counseling?

Question by Loretta Lynn: Nurse interested in mental health & crisis counseling?
I am about ready to graduate from nursing school and apply to take my NCLEX. I recently realized that a specific specialty I would love to become involved in is “crisis counseling.” Basically, someone who comes into a hospital/health unit/etc and helps counsel victims in scary & emotional situations. At this point, what would be the best route to go about accomplishing this goal? How does one become a crisis counselor? Could I do this as a nurse or should I go back to school for psychology/counseling?

I apologize if this all seems mixed up. I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Thank you for serious answers only.

Can Anyone Tell Me How Psychotherapy Training Is Provided in the USA?

Question by Ambi valent: Can anyone tell me how psychotherapy training is provided in the USA?
I’m beginning to think that the term ‘psychotherapist’ has completely different connotations in the USA from in the UK and Europe. Responses on here seem to indicate that psychotherapy is seen as a rather low-level activity, below that of psychologists. As I went through a lengthy (six year), in-depth training during which I was in personal therapy throughout, had to meet serious academic targets, and was guided by supervision starting with one client and working up to six clients over a 4 1/2 year period, I feel my qualification is worth something. This is not, perhaps, the case in the USA. A recent question to which I responded had other answerers suggesting that ‘therapists’ are people who don’t progress beyond the Masters level of a psychology training. This would be an entirely different understanding of the word, and I don’t want to represent myself on here in ways that will be misunderstood.
So, can anyone tell me if there are independent trainings in psychotherapy in the USA, and, if so, what they entail? Are there psychoanalytic, gestalt, transactional analysis, psychosynthesis, integrative, transpersonal, or other, trainings? We have all those and more.
