I Need Money to File for Bankruptcy. Where Can I Turn?

Question by sadinLA: I need money to file for bankruptcy. Where can I turn?
I have $ 30,000 in medical and credit card debt from when I was going through cancer treatment. I have lost everything in trying to pay this down,. Recently one of the collection agencies sued me and won a judgment against me for $ 17,000.

Currently I am living on unemployment, which only pays the rent, utilities and food and nothing more. When I get a job they will start garnishments, which will leave me with just about what I get from unemployment. Not enough to save for anything.

I had a free and very long phone consultation with an attorney, but it will cost between $ 1500 and $ 2000 to file for bankruptcy, which is the only thing that will get me a fresh start at this point. Problem is, I just don’t have it. I’ve sold everything and anything of value just to keep a roof over my head.

My family is non-existent, so I can’t go to them . I called one of the local bar associations, but was told that I don’t qualify because I don’t have any minor children at home. What can I do?
In case someone is wondering, the only reason I have access to the internet is because I got this free old laptop from my old job (not worth any money to pawn) and I sponge free wi-fi from my neighbor.
Thank you all so much for your answers and help so far! I’m really scared to file for bankruptcy without an attorney, because I’m not legally savvy, and everything I’ve read about do-it-yourself filing so far just confuses the heck out of me. BTW, I’m in Illinois.
The judgment is real. I received the court verdict in the mail. I couldn’t show up in court that day, because I had to work and could not get off to attend.

no creditor can make you live below poverty, tell them what you can afford to pay and if they dont like it tell them you are going to file bankrupcy, i bet they will take what you offer rather than nothing
