How Important Is Knowledge of Statistics to a Career as a Psychologist?

Question by Alannah: How important is knowledge of statistics to a career as a psychologist?
Hi everyone,

My main question is: what would be the consequences of forgetting what was learnt in an undergraduate (Bachelor’s) psychology degree for a career as either a Clinical Children’s Psychologist or a Health Psychologist?

I’m in the third year of my undergraduate psychology degree, and am finding that I don’t remember much of what I learnt in first and second year. This worries me, especially now that we are covering even more content than we covered in previous years!

I do, however, have many textbooks, study notes and reference books with all of this information.

I hope to continue my education, and train to either become a Children’s Clinical Psychologist or a Health Psychology; I’m undecided.

So, given the above information, what would be the consequences of forgetting what was learnt in my undergraduate psychology degree if I chose to practice as either a Children’s Clinical Psychologist or Health Psychologist??

Thank you!

Most people forget what they learn during their undergraduate years. The trick is to be prepared when the time for demonstrating your skills comes.

Being able to research effectively will help. Because you have already covered the general topics, and have a fair understanding of the arguments, as well as the various theories and models, then researching them for light knowledge touch ups will be easier.

Organise your learning, and keep an active interest in the subject areas. You don’t have to have absolute precision in the knowledge, although the ability to recover relevant material from your books is essential, and for that, being well acquainted with the theories and persuasions in my opinion is useful.
