What Is and Is Not “Drug-Seeking Behaviour”?

Question by Do your own thinking!: What is and is not “drug-seeking behaviour”?
Saw a movie recently that had a bit of dialogue between a shrink and her legitimately stressed-out patient that went roughly — _very_ roughly —

Doctor: What can I do to help you?
Patient: At this point, I need some Valium or something like that.
Doctor: I won’t prescribe it. That’s drug-seeking behaviour.

Absurd as it is, even the most rational sort of ‘I think I am at the point where I am in need of medication’ seems to be labelled “drug-seeking behaviour” by a lot of doctors. Are there formal definitions for it?

That is a touchy subject in patient – doctor relations.

If I Told a Therapist “I Just Want You to Listen”, Would He/she Accept That?

Question by abc: If I told a therapist “I just want you to listen”, would he/she accept that?
I want to say “I just want you to listen and believe me.” That is all i ever wanted. Instead, they have their own timetable and agenda, and they never quite get it right. i just want to be understood.

If I approached future therapy this way, do you think the therapist would accept or reject this idea?
Oh, and if I also said “I’m not looking to ‘get better’ necessarily, because when there is that pressure, it tends to go downhill

College Question? Only Experienced People Help Please!?

Question by monica: College question? Only experienced people help please!?
I want to get a BSW (bachelors of social work) and then eventually a MSW. I’m curious though what should I major my a.a in? I really want to do it in childhood education, just incase social work doesn’t work out I will have a back up plan. Could I do this?

Answer by Baron
I do not understand what you mean by “aa”? A Bachelors is followed by a Master’s. Do you mean your concentration while studying at the Master’s level? Such as “counseling” or “group dynamics” or “childhood disorders” or “substance abuse” or “elder care”???? Is this what you are asking?
Childhood EDUCATION sounds problematic to me, as first off, when you indicate EDUCATION, you would be competing with folks who hold a Bachelors of Arts in Education, as well as those who hold that degree and are moving forward with their own Master’s. They would be given preference, and do not underestimate the power that being in the school system has. If you are aiming at being a School Counselor, then I think you could angle that, but a teaching position as a failsafe I would say probably not.
