Can Anyone Help Me in My Online Scheduling for El Centro College?

Question by Erebus Elysium: Can anyone help me in my online scheduling for El Centro College?
I’ve been signing into El Centro for a Fall Semester and I have already been to New Student Orientation this past saturday (August 10). Now here’s the problem; I was the last one to leave at Orientation because I didn’t fully understand what I was supposed to be doing. On eConnect, on the page “Find Classes & Register/Add”, I am supposed to pick my classes and Register from there. Because eConnect sucks, from what I’m getting from this, I feel like it wants me to sign up for 20 classes in the Fall Semester (i.e. take 20 classes each week).

Earlier today I went to the Advising Office and I went up to ask someone there (since someone told me that was the place to ask) and they all just looked at me like I was crazy.

I have a habit of over-thinking things so I might be missing something right in front of me. Am I missing something obvious?

Also, I was also told by the person at Orientation said she “highly advised us” (in as big air quotes as you could fathom) for us to take “Education Personal (EUDC)” and “Computer Science (COSC)” courses (my mother calls them “classes for taking college courses”. She’s a long time college teacher and even she couldn’t make sense of this system). Does this mean that I have to take these courses first thing or is it not as mandatory as I think it is?

I’m sorry to hear that the advising office counselors “looked at you like you were crazy.” Obviously, you need the help of someone who is familiar with the computerized system you are trying to use, so you are unlikely to bump into anyone on “Answers” who happens to know what to do. Like your mom, I, too, have been a college teacher for many years. I do not believe you should be taking twenty classes. That’s crazy. You should probably be taking four or five, depending on the number of credits each class has. Your mom is right about the education and computer science classes. They are, indeed, mostly information about “how to take college classes.” But here’s a little something to think about. By your own admission, at the orientation session, you “didn’t fully understand what you were supposed to be doing.” So what did you do? Did you raise your hand, ask questions, and get the matter cleared up? It does not appear so. Those goofy “education” classes are for the specific purpose of helping students feel more comfortable speaking up, getting information from the correct sources, and acting quickly when things start to go wrong. It all sounds silly, but, unfortunately, these are skills which many students do not develop before they get to college. As to how to solve your problem, you need to go back to the Advising Office and get information. (You say that they looked at you funny, but you do not say what happened next. Did you ask for information? Did they refuse to talk to you? Did they stick out their tongues at you and call you names? Why were you willing to leave without knowing what to do??) Insist on finding out the information you missed at orientation. Take your mom with you if necessary. (I know. I know. You would rather stick needles in your eyes than be seen on campus with your mom, but you said she knows something about how colleges work, right? Let her use her experience and knowledge to help you solve this!!) You will not find out what to do by waiting to get lucky enough for someone on “Answers” to explain it.
