Why Is It That More Times Than Not, People’s Answer to Life’s Issues Is to “Seek Therapy” or “Get Counseling”?
Question by expatriate59: Why is it that more times than not, people’s answer to life’s issues is to “seek therapy” or “get counseling”?
Don’t you guys realize that good quality therapy or counseling isn’t financially available to everyone, and the majority of insurance companies will not cover mental health therapy (which is what this is)?
While there may be agencies that provide counseling for a nominal fee or for free, those tend to not have the quality that is needed in many cases.
Also, how do you know that the person asking the questions hasn’t tried therapy or counseling already?
Unless you have REAL advice to give, this is one of those situations where it is best not to answer, than to say “get therapy”.
Link955 says, “”Get counseling” isn’t the empty phrase you seem to think it is. I don’t give that kind of advice lightly, and to tell the truth, I am a little insulted that you would think so. ”
My answer: To bad! The truth hurts, pure and simple.
To Link again: I wanted an answer, not a rebuke, nor a debate, since this isn’t the right place for it.

I dont think people say ‘get therapy’ as a cop out – I mean I genuinley believe that therapy is beneficial, and really does help most people sort out what’s wrong. (I’ve had it!!)
I dont believe that you should have to pay for it. I am in the UK, and we dont get counceling services on the nhs – you get 6 weeks with a councellor, and then you have to start paying. Well 6 weeks is nothing!!! My Mother had a break down, and she had to pay for her own councelling afterwards – £20.00 an hour every week for 2 years!!! Absoulutely disgusting. It is definately an issue that needs to be addressed, because most people cant financially afford to pay for that, yet it may be the only way they can deal with their problems.
The thing is, most of the time life’s issues – the things that life throws at us scar us, and it doesnt always come to a head until later on. It is better talking to a stranger (therapist) than to a member of your family or a friend. We are alot more open with strangers – no holds barred sort of thing.
My thoughts are that everyone should have free access to a therapist throughout their entire life!!!! It helped me after i was physically abused by me ex husband for 4 years. I had no confidence, but councelling helped me through it.
Its not just something people say for no reason – it actually does work.
