When Did Marriage Start Requiring a Religious “official” to Be Present?

Question by : When did marriage start requiring a religious “official” to be present?
I’ve always found it odd that there is supposed to be a separation of church and state but every marriage needs to be done by a religious “official”. When did religion get forced upon the marriage ceremony?
Doesn’t a Captain have to be ordained or something?

Not true — you can get married by a captain at sea, for example.
