What to Do When You Literally Can’t Afford Therapy?
Question by Megan: What to do when you literally can’t afford therapy?
I know I have at least one mental health problem. I’m not sure what, I have symptoms of depression, anxiety, paranoid personality disorder, and OCD, but I’ve never been able to be diagnosed because I can’t afford therapy and neither can my parents.
I’m 19 and living at home. There are a few therapists in my area that take my parents’ health insurance, but there is still a $ 50 copay for each visit, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but my parents literally can’t afford anything other than their bills right now. I don’t have a “real job” right now (I do babysit) because it’s impossible to get a job with no relevant experience around here, and even when I do find one, I have to save up for college. So I can’t pay for it. I haven’t even told my parents that I want to get therapy, because they’ll just laugh at me and tell me to get over it, but I know they can’t pay for it anyway.
Everyone says to find a community mental health center, but those don’t exist anywhere near where I live. I’ve tried all kinds of self help articles and books, and there is nothing that works. I have a lot of issues that I want to sort out before it’s too late. I can’t talk to my regular doctor either, because he’s a family member, and doctor patient confidentiality apparently doesn’t apply to family, I know he’ll tell my parents about it.
So what do I do? I need help…
I don’t want to rely on meds alone. I want to actually work through my problems and solve them, not cover them up with medication. And I don’t think I could just go to some doctor who doesn’t know anything about me and ask for medication and instantly get it. And I’m agnostic, I don’t believe that religion would help with any of this.

If there is a walk0in centre near where you live try going to that maybe? Or see if it’s possible to bok an appointment with someone besides the family member?
Failing this, talk to someone within your college or try out this website www.kooth.com It’s free online counselling, I’ve recently started using it and it does actually help a bit.
Also, if you told your parents they would understand if you explained in depth, I remember trying to tell my mum that u felt depressed, she told me I didn’t know the meaning of it then 3 months later she questioned why I was in hospital following an overdose. They will understand you and help you.
Or if you need a friend that knows what you’re going through, i’m here anytime.
