Question by TimeTraveller: What should i major in if i want to open my own business as a child psychologist ?
I’m a rising senior and it’s time to decide which college and major i want. I know somewhere down the line i’d like to open my own business for child psychology, but I’m not sure what to major in. Should i do a major in psychology and a minor in child development or a double major in both. Or maybe i should do counseling psychology ?

Also i want to be able to prescribe. Any colleges in mind would be helpful also.

Let me try to lay it out really simply:
Firstly, a “psychologist” is someone with a doctorate (usually a PsyD or a PhD) in psychology. A psychologist can practice alone and own their own business. They can only prescribe in a few states, and only psychometric drugs.
A “psychiatrist” is a medical doctor (someone with an M.D. who went to med school) with additional training in psychology. They generally only prescribe drugs and do not do therapy. If you are looking to see kids for more than 15 minutes every three months, this probably isn’t what you want.
A “counselor” or “therapist” has a masters degree in psychology or counseling. In some states you need to work for a couple years under another counselor before you are able to work alone. After that though, you can open your own private practice.

As for what major to go for in college, if you plan to be a counselor or a psychologist, any psych related major will be fine. Don’t do a minor or double major unless you check that the additional credits will transfer to your grad school. Otherwise it will just be a waste of money and time. I would suggest leaving specific concentrations for grad school since no one will care what your bachelors is in once you get your masters.
