What Is the Minimum Degree Needed to Be a “psychotherapist”?

Question by Sam: What is the minimum degree needed to be a “psychotherapist”?
Would just a BA be acceptable? Or is a PhD required?

Also, isn’t it true that ANYONE — even with no degree whatsoever — can legally call themself a “psychotherapist”?

You can be a psychotherapist with a masters degree (clinical or counseling psychology), as well as a PhD. Masters takes about 2.5 years of education and 3 years of supervised work before you can be on your own. PhD takes about 7 years before you can be on your own, not including post-doctoral work (about 2 years extra) and additional supervised clinical time.
