Simply put the intern gets the shyt work that no one else wants to do. You will get the shifts that the other docs don’t want to pick up. At a teaching hospital you will take rounds on different units. For instance you might get assigned to the oncology unit for 4 months. You will have a doctor that oversees you and oncology is his specialty. You will take care of the patients and answer any questions the nurses have about their care. On average the intern works 80 hours a week. This is usually not as bad as it sounds since you may sleep during this shift at most places. Many times you will be expected to pull a 24 hour shift, and take care of the patients for 24 hours. You rest when you can and if there is a problem, the nurse will let you know….usually by waking you up. During the day you will round with the specialist, and other doctors in that feild so you can ask questions and see all your patients. Some teaching facilities will have teams, one team will cover a 12 hour shift and the next covers the other 12 hour shift. Some of the time you will be requested to work the full weekend so the other shift can have a couple days off. You catch sleep when you can, but expect to be chronically tired.
