I keep reading about it for California, but I don’t exactly know what it is, just that it was abolished in 1976.

It wasn’t abolished, they just changed the name.
What was, until 1976, called the “California Adult Authority”, then became the “California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation” – the agency that runs the prisons.
In 2005 its counterpart, the “California Youth Authority” was actually abolished, and rolled over to become the “Division of Juvenile Justice”, which is part of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
