Question by penguinpwnge: What are some alternatives to saying “I’m sorry for your loss”?
My favorite teacher’s mom died Monday morning and I’m sure he’s heard a lot of “I’m sorries” or “i feel your loss”. how do i say my condolences without those trite, overused phrases?

sometimes just asking, how are you, or are you ok can be the kindest thing to do, it doesnt give them a constant reminder that they have lost a person they loved and it shows you care for the person’s feelings more than the generic ‘sorry for your loss.’ statement. because that is what that is: a statement, and a statememnt does not hold a conversation, or care for feelings, because its said and that’s it.. but a question gives the person a chance to open up (of course as he is your teacher he wont start crying on your shoulder or anything, but he will feel touched by your acknowlegement of what has happened and by your concern for his feelings.)
