How Do I Deal With My Grief?
Question by bassetfreak: how do I deal with my grief?
my 16 year old cat has been losing weight recently. I have had her to the vets 7 times since Sept 29. tried different foods, thought maybe she had a bowel infection, so tried different antibiotics, did an ultrasound – you name it – it was done. I finally had to make THE decision today – I know it was the right thing to do, because she was basically starving to death – wasn’t absorbing the nutrients from her food – but it doesn’t make it hurt any less. I miss her so much, all I have done all day is cry. If there had been anything else to do, I would have done it. When does it stop hurting? I found her in a field when she was about 4 weeks old and have had her ever since – she was my baby -and it just hurts SO bad. I don’t honestly know if I can go on without her – she’s all I had – and now I’m all alone
I have no one – absolutely no – one in this world. it was just me and Misty. I can’t even think of getting another cat, because I never want to go through this much pain again. I honestly don’t think I can go on living with this much pain – it feels like my heart has been ripped from my chest. I’m not in good health anyway-I have major depressive disorder and also have had 3 heart attacks, so I think it’s best if I join her

How Do I Deal With Pet Deaths?

Answer by lovemice
I am so, so sorry. It is hard enough to lose one rodent let alone two in such a short span. I find it helpful to post a memorial on a Mousie Heaven for my lost mice. A rat forum I also use has a Rainbow Bridge category called, “Over the Rainbow Bridge” where you can do the same for your little ones. The link is below:

You may also find an article written by the AFRMA (American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association) helpful. It is called, “Companion Animal Loss &
Pet Owner Grief”. It is in two parts as follows:

Losing a Pet – Pet Loss Support Resources
Losing a pet – pet loss support resources – www.marilynmilano.net Some people have said that losing a pet is the most devastating thing they’ve ever gone through. Their pet was with them day and night and now there is a huge void. Worse yet, people who aren’t that into animals, and even well meaning friends and family, often don’t get it at all. There are support groups available in many communities that can help make life after loss a little easier, and there are other resources too including some wonderful books by author Christine Davis. I volunteer at our local animal shelter for a pet loss support group. Sometimes one person shows up, sometimes there’s a group. It’s a safe environment in which people can talk about their animals, share stories and memories, and even address questions like “will I ever love again” after this. We have written materials we share, including online resources, comforting pet loss quotes and articles, and books. I also discovered, in this past year, Christine Davis’ books—”For Every Dog an Angel” and “For Every Cat an Angel”. The books are beautifully and magically illustrated, and the message is healing and comforting. Check out her website at www.lightheartedpress.com as she also has several other beautiful books. Check into possible resources in your own community and if you don’t have a pet loss support group it might be possible to start one with the help of a local animal rescue group or shelter. The most important thing to know is that there are other people out there who care …
