Why Was I Lied to in Such a Harmful Way by Mental Health Professionals?

Question by Anna: Why was I lied to in such a harmful way by mental health professionals?
I’ve been told for years that I’ll have to be on meds and in therapy for the rest of my life. So far, neither of these things have done me any good. Only harm. They led me to actually believe this garbage, and believe I’ll never have a happy life (my therapist told me I’ll have to “cope with my symptoms” for my whole life). I’m in a 12 step program, and it has done wonders. My self pity and suicidal thinking is GONE. I’m on no medication. I do more than talk about my feelings, I’m actually working on my issues instead of talking about them for an hour. Why do they lie? Do they lie this way to everyone? Damn them!

Is It True That Muslims Almost Always Reject Criticism of Islam?

Question by majordun: Is it true that Muslims almost always reject criticism of Islam?
11/21/10 VOA: The U.N. General Assembly committee that deals with human rights issues has adopted a resolution condemning widespread human rights abuses in Iran. The resolution was drafted by Canada and co-sponsored by 42 other countries. Canadian U.N. Ambassador John McNee, said, “The members of this committee cannot ignore Iran’s continued human rights violations: stonings, torture, flogging, amputations, executions of juveniles, executions by strangulation, continuing discrimination against women and minorities, and a persistent failure to uphold due process. Mr. Chair, these violations continue and continue to worsen.”

The response from Iranian human rights chief Mohammad Javad Larijani Larijani was predictable: “Let me make it quite clear that the United States of America is the mastermind and the main provocateur, and as far as the substance is concerned this text does not have anything to do with human rights and its promotion.” Isn’t that the standard response when anyone criticizes Islam? “You’re discriminating against us because we’re Muslims!”

How Do You Manage a Job With an Overnight Shift?

Question by s1duri: How do you manage a job with an overnight shift?
I am going into the psychology field, fresh out of college with a BA. I’d like to be a residential counselor at a live-in community program for troubled youth, and a lot of the available jobs are overnight hours on weekdays (like 11pm to 7 am). At first I refused the possibility of being an “Awake Overnight Counselor” because I didn’t think I’d be able to have friends or continue seeing my boyfriend. For those of you who also work overnight hours, how do you manage to have social lives or accomplish other tasks during the day? Or even more basically, is it easy to sleep during daylight hours?
