Eleven and a half million people live on the verge of poverty and social exclusion in Spain. Nearly six million people are unemployed. The economic situation is having a direct impact on people’s health. “Gradually I began to notice that I couldn’t sleep, constantly was in a bad mood, I had to take tranquilizers and antidepressants”, says Gloria Garcia, who suffers from mental health problems. She was left without a job, without any prospects. For people over 50 there are not many opportunities on the labor market. “The situation is becoming increasingly worse, and to wake up in the morning is very hard for me”, says Gloria Garcia. “Unemployment is one of the factors that most affects people’s self-esteem and can lead to anxiety, depression and the consumption of alcohol and drugs, which makes people’s mental state even worse,” says Jeronimo Saiz, President of the Psychiatric Association. Spain is seeing an increase in people suffering from psychological problems and at the same time there are cutbacks in healthcare funding. “We are in a situation which is quite difficult to solve, because at present, psychological and psychiatric examination is more important than ever”, says
