But first I must start with a undergrad program.

Should I enter Psychology or Social Work?

But I am confused because everyone keeps telling me that getting degree in Psychology is worthless. I have even heard people tell me that a master’s degree in Psychology is worthless. What do you think?

What kind of counseling do you want to do? My aunt is a psychology bs/ma, and she works at an elementary school working with kids.

I have a friend who went into social work, and her job is more about helping families who have had problems get back on track.

How does Psychiatry and Counseling fit in? Who can be a Psychotherapist?

Answer by jdphd
Some psychotherapists are Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Other psychotherapists have a masters degree in psychology and have become licensed professional counselors. Some other psychotherapists are psychologists (PhD, PsyD, or EdD). Still other psychotherapists are psychiatrists (MDs) that have completed medical school and can also provide medication.

To be a psychiatrist, a person has to go to medical school. To be a counselor, one can have any of the above-mentioned degrees. To be a psychologist, a person has to go to a doctoral program in psychology. Psychologists have a variety of specialties (clinical, social, developmental, forensic, etc.).

You need at least a masters degree to be able to legally counsel clients. There are several routes:
1. Get a Phd. in PsyD (counseling psychology.
2. Get a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW)
3. Get a Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)

Chose Masters Degree in Psychology or Counseling?

Question by Know One: Chose masters degree in psychology or counseling?
I’ll graduate with my BA in psychology next spring. I knew when I started that I would need more than a BA in psych to get a job in the field. Now I’m torn between master’s programs. Should I choose a MS in psychology or in counseling? I would prefer to find work as some sort of mental health counselor, but I’m not sure which degree opens more doors.

At my nearest state university, I can get licensed through the state by taking the counseling program because it includes enough hours of on-the-job practice with professionals to qualify for licensure. However, I don’t know if a counseling degree is as widely accepted by employers as a psych degree, and I don’t know if one offers a more varied job market than the other.

I believe you do have to have at least a BSW to be a LCSW. There isn’t a whole lot of difference between a LCSW and a LMHC. As far as income, you won’t make any more than maybe 75 grand a year if you are lucky. I actually worked with people who had MS’s in Social Work and Psychology and they made the same I did with a degree in History. There are other options if you want to work with addictions.
