A question I’m asked quite frequently of someone seeking psychotherapy is, “How do I find the right psychotherapist for me?” The first thing I recommend is ask around for a referral from family members, friends, and coworkers. It is then I realize there is still a stigma around getting psychological help. Many people just don’t feel comfortable asking people in their own lives. Either they don’t want others to know that they need help; or they’re afraid of making other people uncomfortable if they asked them!

1. Ask people you know for a suggestion.

My first suggestion is still to ask around (those who you feel comfortable asking). In the meantime, I guess we have to do more educating about psychological problems so that people do not feel judged when they need help.

There are very few relationships in the world today that manage to steer their course through life’s rich tapestry without encountering a few problems along the way. In many instances the rifts that develop between couples are quite minor and begin over something rather trivial. But it is when they go unheeded that these minor incursions can become deep rooted and form the beginnings of a growing divide that can split couples wide apart. Couples counseling is a way of bringing two parties back together again, and allowing them, through the mediation of a professional councilor, to discuss problems in a more rational way.

Very often, the thing that makes rifts worse, and divides even deeper, is that fact that communication between a couple breaks down; and it is communication that is the key. With it there is always a chance of mending bridges, but without it, things will only go from bad to worse.

The history of school counseling formally started at the turn of the twentieth century, although a case can be made for tracing the foundations of counseling and guidance principles to ancient Greece and Rome with the philosophical teachings of Plato and Aristotle. There is also evidence to argue that some of the techniques and skills of modern-day guidance counselors were practiced by Catholic priests in the middle ages, as can be seen by the dedication to the concept of confidentiality within the confessional. Near the end of the sixteenth century, one of the first texts about career options appeared: The Universal Plaza of All the Professions of the World, (1626) written by Tomaso Garzoni quoted in Guez, W. & Allen, J. (2000). Nevertheless, formal guidance programs using specialized textbooks did not start until the turn of the twentieth century.

Hey.
I really want to know if they’re are any “FREE ONLINE COUNSELING” places?
I do not have the time to go to see someone person to person, and I wouldn’t feel totally comfortable with that anyway. So if you could help I’d be very grateful. Thanks
