MEMPHIS, TN – Tate County officials say a man was drunk when he hit a small boy with his SUV and drove away.

Jaime Perez, 35, is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. Investigators also believe Perez is an illegal immigrant. He is accused of hitting 5 year-old Frank Brooks on County Line Road in Tate County.

Alcoholism is one of the most serious problems that has plagued society. Virtually everyone has heard about trouble being caused in a family or elsewhere by someone being drunk.

Unfortunately, many of these same problem people try to avoid their responsibility for doing so by using their alcohol intoxication as an excuse. Silly them! They think it will exonerate them.

How does one define alcoholism?

Alcoholism is a condition that results when any significant area of your life is damaged because of it: Family, parenting, job, physical health, school etc. Someone does not have to consume a lot more alcohol than the norm, or use it more frequently than the norm to be considered alcoholic.

It is impossible to fathom the grief that results in the loss of a child. Only those who have walked in those shoes truly understand. My outlet is to write about my feelings and read those of others to help me cope with my pain. So I have decided to blog about my feelings and write an article for others who have suffered this trauma, an outlet to help me heal and hopefully help others.

My son, Brandon, died on February 19, 2001, it was nine days before his 19th birthday. It was sudden, an automobile accident, in just a blink of an eye my child was taken away from me. Up to that day, my life was going along just fine, actually the same day of the accident I thought to myself, my life is good. Then later that night my life turned in to living nightmare. I am still grieving after almost 10 years, but I have made progress in my grief and that is something at one point I thought was not possible.

Whether you’re still caring for an aging parent or your dependent parents have already passed away, it’s important to recognize what grief looks like and how to incorporate strategies to help you through the process.

Although there are different grief models, many experts say the grieving process generally has 5 stages.

1. Denial – This is the muscle that gets a person through the initial loss. If you’ve been struggling with elder care solutions as you’ve been caring for an aging parent or have just lost dependent parents, you might find yourself saying things like, “This makes no sense!” or “This can’t be my life!” During denial, it’s common for caregivers to go numb. In fact, other family and friends might view the children of aging parents as being cold or detached.
