Is It Proper to Call the Application Process to College “College Admissions” or “College Admission”?

Question by briannovell: Is it proper to call the application process to college “college admissions” or “college admission”?
Is one the right one, do both work the same, or is it a context thing?

Best answer:

Answer by HigherEd PhD Student
I don’t think there is a lot of clarity on this issue; certainly among admission professionals, there are those in both camps.

For example, “The National Association for College Admission Counseling” does not use the “s”, but the “American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers” does.

From a gramatical perspective, if you are talking about one individual, you would be talking about his or her “admission” to the institution (no “s”). If you were talking about a group, it becomes less clear, and one could likely argue either case.

From a personal perspective, I tend to use “admission” whenever possible.

Should Doctors Be “counseling” the Elderly on Living Wills and Advance Directives?

Question by Pascha: Should doctors be “counseling” the elderly on living wills and advance directives?
The health care reform bill has a provision which would pay doctors to do this.

Is this wise, considering the pressure doctors can put on patients and families to get what they want?

I have seen how doctors would like to ignore the advance directives of patients. When there is a notarized advance directive in the patient’s file and the doctor doesn’t like it, he will whip out a form of his own which he will pressure the person holding the health care power of attorney to sign. I have experienced this.
