Do You Think My Dad’s Health Insurance Would Cover Therapy for Me?

Question by ??????? ? JON ? ???????: Do you think my dad’s health insurance would cover therapy for me?
I am 20, and I’d like to go to psychological therapy this summer, a few sessions maybe, but I don’t want my parents to know. I do have my dad’s health insurance card though…do you think therapy would be covered? I know you don’t know his exact plan…but is therapy one of those things that’s never covered, or maybe is it always? Thanks for any help.
Libbyami: Should have seen that coming. Why do people always assume I don’t have a job? I do. And I’m a full time student. But I don’t want to go to their counseling services because I’m always afraid I’ll see someone there.

It varies. Some plans cover mental health and some don’t. Check with your dad’s insurance provider. All health questions are confidential.

The most recent I could find for the US has the figures for 1997:

“A study shows that the U.S. spent a combined $ 11.9 billion on alcohol and drug abuse treatment, while the total social costs were more than $ 294 billion. The results were part of the National Estimates of Expenditures for Substance Abuse Treatment, 1997, which was released at the end of April by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

The report, prepared by the MEDSTAT Group for SAMHSA, examines how much is spent in the U.S. to treat alcohol and drug abuse, how that spending has changed between 1987 and 1997, how much of the spending is done by the private and public sectors, and how substance abuse expenditures compare to spending for mental health and other health conditions in the U.S.”

Of Course There Won’t Be Any Death Panels. Right?

Question by Poke_the_Bear: Of course there won’t be any Death Panels. Right?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1224776/Over-65-Why-doctors-think-giving-latest-cancer-drugs-just-waste.html

Alarming research is showing that elderly cancer patients are missing out on the breakthroughs in chemotherapy and surgery that have dramatically improved the outcome of younger patients.
In fact, up to 15,000 elderly people with cancer in the UK are dying prematurely every year when compared to the rest of Europe and the U.S., according to a report published by the North West Cancer Intelligence Service (NWCIS) which compiles cancer statistics. . . .
A major concern is that the NHS Cancer Plan, introduced in 2000 to improve cancer survival in the UK, has a cut-off point at 70. This results in hospitals having less interest in the elderly. “Yet half of all those diagnosed with cancer are over 70,” says Dr Tony Moran, NWCIS research director. “It’s an area that has been grossly neglected. . . .”
Not surprised there, Townshend, since you don’t feel the need to actually read.
Come on, Mister Ed, why respond with the hate? I thought you guys on the left were the party of love. I guess it is just the ones that agree with you that are treated better. So sad……

Do You Think There Is Room for the Integration of “alternative” Medicine Into Mainstream Medical Science?

Question by Milk: Do you think there is room for the integration of “alternative” medicine into mainstream medical science?
Do you think there is room for the integration of “alternative” medicine into mainstream medical science and medical practice (or to borrow a phrase from a homeopath I once met, “allopathic

I ask not only because my medical aid (referred to as medical insurance) is spending massive amounts (in my view wasting massive) of the commonweal funding visits to homeopaths, herbalists and even *sniggers* flowerpaths.

In addition, in South Africa (where I am from) practitioners in the field of alternative medicine have called for more collaboration with doctors. Students of homeopathy in South Africa are petitioning the Department of Health for recognition in the form of compulsory community service (it is mandatory for all newly qualified main-stream health professionals to work in state hospitals and clinics for a period of two years – this has led to much consternation, as they can obviously earn far more). They have proposed that they work collaboratively with doctors to treat patients. Traditional healers (even though they have no formal qualification) are demanding the same recognition.
