Question by Know One: Is substance abuse counseling a good stepping stone for mental health career?
I’ve been working at the same dead-end retail job for years and I need a change. I just got my BA in psych, and while I plan on going for an MS in social work in the future, I can’t fathom staying put at my current job for another 2 1/2 years as I complete the degree. I want to switch to a job that it is both more rewarding than what I’m doing now and fits with the human services field. I thought about substance abuse counseling because I am most interested by mental illnesses such as addiction. The process of getting licensed won’t take me that long, since my BA helps.

I’m just wondering- is the kind of work a substance abuse counselor does a good preparation for becoming a social worker? This is important to me because a) I don’t want to steer myself off the path of social work if it’s dissimilar, and b) I want to find something that will help me get accepted into a competitive social work graduate program.

I know lost of social workers who are substances abuse conclers so I think it's a great stepping stone and will look great on your application. Having work experience in a social work program is great because When your peers are talking about the abstract you have some real life stories to bring to the table. Good luck trying to work and get an MSW both your fist and secound year of any accredited program is going to have three semesters of 360 hour internships. Basically a part time job you have to pay for to gain experience. I knew people who worked and went to school and its a lot. An MSW is a great degree with lots of job options way more then your BA in phyc currently offers.
