Is It Possible and if So How Do You Get Someone Psychologically Assessed Without Their Knowledge?

Question by ?Kazz?: Is it possible and if so how do you get someone psychologically assessed without their knowledge?
I have bipolar 2 and I have been speaking to my mother about my fathers rapidly declining behaviour (maybe I got it from him??) – he is always yelling at my mum – he loses words – he loses track of his own conversations – he is spending money my parents dont really have to spend his most recent purchase a few days ago was apparently $ 1000 on and anvil – I asked my mum what he did that for and she said because he thinks he is going to build a barge…he has bought a digeridoo as he was going to learn how to play it (never has tried it) he buys antique sewing machines that are all over the house with no purpose etc..

My parents are going into hospital in just under a month so my mum and donate a kidney to dad (he has been on dialysis for a couple of years now) Im wondering if its possible to talk to the hospital and get them to do a “after surgery counselling” or something like that and assess him then or is there any other way to do it? He is not likely to agree to go and get assessed as there is nothing wrong with him (in his mind)

Im more concerned about my mother as she is falling into a depression trying to live with dad – when he is at dialysis she has great conversations with us but when dad is around she wont talk much at all – she has made jokes about turning up on our doorstep with her bags packed etc.

I’m in America and we have the ability to committ people to hospitals if we feel or see that they are a danger to themselves or others. However, we really need good proof to do that. A person over 18 that is their own guardian cannot be assessed unless they are told they are. They have to be willing. That’s why we commit unwilling people to get the assessment and get them the help they need. But if he is his own guardian he will have to sign consent forms giving the doctor permission to evaluate and treat him.
