If You Are a “Counselling Psychologist” Then Answer This!?
Question by han9290: If you are a “counselling psychologist” then answer this!?
Hi I am in Yr 10 at school.
I am seriously thinking about being a psychologist, especially working with families, children helping with their day to day lives, but I am not really sure what the work entails or whether i want to do it for the rest of my life!
I was wondering if someone could tell me in detail what kind of work it involves and whether you enjoy it from a personal point of view.
Thanks! 🙂

I’m not counseling, I’m clinical, but that’s pretty close. It sounds like you want to be doing mostly therapy (you could also do consultation, which is evaluation and helping the person get set up with resources). Your day will primarily consist of meeting with patients and their families to offer support and solutions and meeting with community members to improve resources for families.
I personally love it (otherwise I wouldn’t do it), but you do need to be mindful of your own emotions because there is a high burnout rate if you don’t take care of yourself. It’s a hard job emotionally, but it is also very rewarding. You have to develop good coping skills and the ability to “leave it at work”. School will teach you how to do that.
If that’s what you are interested in, we could certainly use more people- especially in rural and underserved populations. Good luck!!!
