As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I’m glad to see someone interested in learning something in the mental health field. Let me recommend that, based on your specific interest of working with adolescents with parents who have drug problems, that you get heavily involved with a renowned program called Adult Children of Alcoholics and Drug Abusers (ACOA/DA). It’s closely associated with Alcoholics Anonymous, and is very well established and there is PLENTY of written material on the field you’re interested in. Focusing on this material avoids some “well-intended” material put forth by psychologists and psychiatrists that is definitely NOT appropriate, and does NOT reflect accurate knowledge in the subject you’re interested in. I don’t know of any university that offers a degree in this particular subject matter, without it just being “thrown-in”, at best, and most often very wrong. I rarely come out so clear on a subject like this but, the facts in treatment history speak for themselves, so, get your psychology degree, but NEVER rely on the psychology or psychiatric field for the “final word” in your field of interest. I do wish you the best of success, since it’s so needed in the “counseling” or mental health treatment field. God Bless you.
