How Do You Talk to Your Kids About Death?

Question by JAG: How do you talk to your kids about Death?
My 6 yr old daughter has always been very sensitive and intutive to a degree. Lately, she will seemingly suddenly turn to me and say (with her clear wide blue eyes) and say (lip quivering), Mom, am I ever going to die?

Of course I don’t want to lie to her but as soon as I start to gently explain the rules of life, she starts to cry and say, ‘don’t tell me that! I don’t want to! I will never die!” I’m sure she fully understands that death is something that we all will have to face but it is so frightening for her, she can’t tolerate it. She has been asking this question at various times for weeks now.

Our relatives are elderly and there is a great possibility someone close to her will die sooner rather than later. How can I prepare her for this without scarring her or creating undue stress?
Retro – I’m so sorry for your loss. I think it is an ultra-sensitive age.
ROXXY – ironically, she has is adamently stating ‘I DON’T want to go live with God and Jesus, I want to stay with you, Mom!”

I’m not going to pretend to know what I’m talking about when it comes to approaching the subject of death with your kids, however I do know that it can be helpful for children to own pets. It’s healthy for them to have to deal with their pet’s death. Guinea pigs etc.
