How Competitive Are Mental Health Counseling Grad Programs? Job Prospects?

Question by Denise: How competitive are mental health counseling grad programs? Job prospects?
I’m currently a college sophomore. I’m thinking of majoring in psych and then applying to a mental health counseling grad program and get my masters.

How difficult is it to get into the program? What is the competition?

What are the job prospects for a mental health counselor? Is it a stable and secure job?
Salaries aren’t my main focus btw. My main concern is whether I’d be able to find a job as a mental health counselor and secure it.

Don’t want to discourage you, and I’m not a psychologist but my parents are both doctors and all I hear is that no one can get a job with a psychology degree unless they have a doctorate and even then it’s not a sure thing like most other health care professions because psych majors are a dime a dozen. Hope that helps
