How Can I Help My Dog Cope With Grief?

Question by : How can I help my dog cope with grief?
Hi, my 10 year old chocolate lab died last week, and I also have another 2 year old beagle. My beagle is grieving terribly and cannot even run and play, yet eat a bowl of food. She’s so distressed and sad about it. It’s heartbreaking to see her upset, and having to deal with grief myself.

I’ve looked on every kind of “helping your dog deal with grief” sites and I haven’t found anything at all. I just want my pup to feel happier and get through it. I know time will, but I cannot bear one more minute of her sadness…. along with my own. So, have you had do deal with this situation? If so, he’d you deal with it?

Thank you so much for reading this. I’m in a lot of pain, and so is my puppy. It’s so hard to deal with the death of any pet and I’m taking it really hard, but my dog is taking it harder. My lab was basically my beagle’s mom. They were so close…. I’m heartbroken.

When my GSD passed, her playmate- our second dog who was real attached to her, did mourn her passing. Dogs do this sometimes and what helped the most was to keep my dog on her routine. I’d take her for her regular walks, play dates, regular meal times etc and even though she was clearly disturbed that her best friend was not there any more, she did get over it in about two weeks. Keeping her on her routine helped me, too. For my own grieving, it helped a lot to write. I wrote a sort of good-bye letter to her and didn’t think of what I would write, just put pen to paper and let it flow. That was a huge help. I framed some photos and made a scrapbook and now the sad ache of missing her is replaced by warm memories. Take care of yourself and your other pup and you have my sympathy for what you are going through right now.
