How Can I Help My 24 Yo Son With His Psychological Problems?

Question by Edson: How can I help my 24 yo son with his psychological problems?
At 14 he did something bad that could get him in trouble with the law. We were harsh, told him, besides othe things, he had destroyed our trust in him, we’d never trust him again and he didn’t deserve our respect. Such words broke his spirit but we wanted him to face the consequences. He got a kinda harsh punishment that lasted almost a year. During this time we were firm, though he pleaded for forgiveness and trust. He had a really hard time, still worse because we didn’t withdraw our words. . He turned into a trustworthy boy who made us proud, but got psychologically destroyed. Never lived down our words and that punishment. It was imposible to restablish a good relationship. He didn’t hate us but felt extremely sad, shocked and never got over. Thererapy didn’t work, he kept repeating things. Now he’s a great mathematician but still emotionally disturbed. I don’t think it’ll ever be possible to reconnect w/ him but I’d like to help end his pain, we never meant this. But how?
Sometimes we feel guilty. And we very sorry he still suffers and our relationship is destroyed

I think you did the right thing, there are not enough parents who hand out a punishment and actually stick with it. Maybe it would be best to sit him down and have a real heart to heart over the whole situation. It is very possible that you are reading too much into this. He could be having trouble with some other aspect of his life such as stressed at work, boyfriend/girlfriend trouble……..you never know. Good luck.
