For the Compulsory Medical Exam That Is Required to Begin Medicare at Age 65 – What Is the Least You Can Do?

Question by mamacedar: For the compulsory medical exam that is required to begin medicare at age 65 – what is the least you can do?
I do not like to go to doctors and I think all those tests like pap smears and mammograms cause lots more harm than good – except they make a lot of $ for the test people.

So without telling me how I really should have that done once a year, etc. can anybody please tell me what is the least that is required for a medicare exam at age 65?
Thanks in advance,
Healthy old broad.

Are you sure it’s required? From reading this page, it sounds like it’s just covered, not required–if you want it, you have to do it within the first six months of coverage. At any rate, it doesn’t sound like a pap smear or mammogram are part of it; just an EKG.

“If your Medicare Part B coverage begins on or after January 1, 2005, Medicare will cover a one-time preventive physical exam within the first six months that you have Part B. The Welcome to Medicare visit is a comprehensive examination consisting of the following 7 components:

1. A review of an individual’s medical and social history with attention to modifiable risk factors

2. A review of an individual’s potential risk factors for depression

3. A review of the individual’s functional ability and level of safety

4. An examination to include an individual’s height, weight, blood pressure measurement, and visual acuity

5. Performance of an electrocardiogram (EKG) and interpretation of the EKG

6. Education, counseling, and referral based on the results of the review and evaluation services described in the previous five components

7. Education, counseling, and referral, including a brief written plan such as a checklist for obtaining the appropriate screening and/or other Medicare Part B preventive services”

Also, pap smears are generally not needed for women over 65 unless you have a history of cancer.

I hope this helps.
