Substance Abuse Counseling is a phenomenon that has become very popular. With the popularity of shows like “Intervention” and “Celebrity Rehab”, we can see that people want to see Substance Abuse Counseling; But Why? Why do people gravitate towards counseling? They want it. People want to get counseling, without going to a counselor. The problem is, people do not want to look awkward; so they watch others; but instead of judging the addicts, people relate. This connection works on many different levels. TV counseling helps viewers address their own issues. It also helps celebrities confess there deepest concerns. Ultimately, the counseling phenomenon let the world relax. Our world is filled with so much stress, counseling TV lets us be fragile; because…we are.

Celebrity Rehab is one the highest rated shows on television. Rather than being revolted by this type of subject matter, people have attached themselves to it. The show provides something that people are craving. People want some sense of repent. Counseling shows deal with addiction. There isn’t one person walking the earth who isn’t dealing with some form of addiction or personal sin. We are humans and a constant work in process. But in order to be a work-in-progress, we have to work. The viewer is able to use televised addict as themselves. They can feel the pain of the addict and question themselves. Televised Drug Counseling isn’t a cure for our personal flaws, but it is a motivation to be better.

Televised drug abuse counseling is very popular for celebrities. Many celebrities see it as a way to get back into the spotlight. Others see it as motivation to talk to counselors. One thing that definitely comes from reality counseling is…confessions. People have always heard about confessionals in the cultures of church. To many people, church is not something they connect to. Television is something very instant and genuine to celebrities. Being in front of the camera is a part of their lives. Drug counseling TV becomes a place to truly be honest. Being honest in front of a camera allows a person to be honest; not with the world but themselves. When people allow themselves to be honest, they can finally free themselves. They realize what it is like to truly be themselves and not caring about judgment.

The biggest thing a viewer and participant get from a televised counseling is fragility. When a person allows his or herself to experience recovery, the lie of perfection is let go. No one is ever going to be perfect; but we live in society built on money and production. Everything has to be done yesterday. Bills are stacked to the sky. This type of environment motivates drug use. People take drugs to gain a sense of fragility. Drugs give a people what they want more than anything else; time. As children we didn’t have bills, meetings, or mortgages. We had time; to be ourselves. When we became adults we lost our time; and we spend our days trying to realize…it’s still ours.

Substance abuse counseling is the ability for people to be human. Being human isn’t about perfection; it’s about trying your best and being decent. In a dog-eat-dog world this seems fighting a lion. That’s why we all need positive guidance.
