Do You Have/want a Career or a Job?
Question by .: Do you have/want a career or a job?
Some people have jobs, others have careers.
Which do you have?
Some place great value on their “career.”
Others just work their job to get the biggest paycheck they can so that they can go off and do other stuff.
Some of the career-oriented contingent feel that their “career” is a major *part* of their life accomplishment and provides a certain level of personal fulfillment.
Which camp are you in?
1) My career is very important to me. It’s more than just a paycheck.
2) Just give me a job with the biggest paycheck I can get. I don’t care how big my office is or how many people report to me.
3) Somewhere in the middle.
I’m a number 2. I’ve probably accomplished more than many will, but it’s still just work. I sometimes enjoy it but am still trying to retire soon.
I thought this *might* be a good topic for G&WS since careers and work is a frequent topic of conversation.
Ms. Super Ruper – very interesting story, and well executed plan.
I am trying to execute a similar plan without making quite as many sacrifices along the way. My work can be interesting, sometimes exciting, and always challenging.
But, I’ve got other things I’d rather do, and hope to spend much more time doing them in a couple years if the creek don’t rise.

At this point in time, I would rather have a job that could provide me with skills for my future career. University students don’t have much time for careers.
For the long haul, I am in camp #1. Work has always been a means of fulfillment for me, and I could never see myself without it. Money is a definite plus, of course, but I don’t see why you have to hate the way you earn it.

You don't hire a special counselor to see if he's taking meth and then issue a report saying the meth addict needs to get off meth. They need to be taken off the drug they crave. The same is true of the IRS. Trust me. This column is the opinion of …
