Hello, Nan. Yes, of course. To start, go to your community college Web site and look for the college catalog. That’s where you’ll find out which classes are necessary to complete an Associates degree. You may also purchase the catalog at the campus bookstore.

Most of the classes you will take in your freshman and sophmore years of college are “general education” classes. Stuff like English, Math, U.S. History, some social science and humanities electives, etc. This is as true for students at a four year university as it is for community college students.

Are you thinking of transferring to a four year college and earning a bachelor’s degree? If so, you want to explore the college catalog for that college. You should seek academic counseling at both colleges (community and four year). Often, community college campuses will have a “transfer center”, with all the information you need to figure out which courses at your community college will transfer as well as count towards your associates degree.

If you happen to be in California, check out the ASSIST site!
http://www.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html

If you’re in another state, use google to look for a similar online tool in your state. One last thing… In the schedule of classes for your community college, look for something that indicates transferability of the course. (In California we have the CSU and UC systems and the courses have these abbreviations next to their description in the class listings.)

Best of luck.

Additional comment: An entry level librarian position requires a master’s degree. Community colleges will sometimes offer a certificate or associate’s degree for library technicians or library associates (for library support staff).
