Shantrice Morrell, 14, and her mom, Pamela, said they get along well now, but in the past they said it was a challenge. “I would yell, scream, get very upset, slam doors,” Shantrice said. Her therapist said that type of behavior is part of a growing trend of angry young girls. “It’s an extremely huge problem, mainly because parents and caregivers don’t recognize it,” Natasha Pemberton-Todd said. Pemberton-Todd, who works at a mental health agency called Melange Health Solutions, said girls are less likely than boys to express anger through physical fights. Instead, she said, girls might spread rumors on Facebook or MySpace. VIDEO: Signs Of Anger That May Be Overlooked “It is emotional violence, where someone will use a social network to isolate or bully someone else,” she said. For the first time, Melange is offering counseling to middle school girls in groups with their peers. The program is called the Young Lioness Anger Management Group.
