Addiction Counseling?
I’m finishing up my undergrad in psychology and philosophy and I plan to go on with Grad school for counseling. I am really interested in substance abuse/addiction counseling and I’m wonding what type of programs I should look into. Is it important to first get a masters and then go on to a Ph.D/PsyD, or to just skip the masters program. I am interested in hearing any ideas on programs or opportunities once i have finished grad schools. Also, would it be better to stay more broad and go into a psychology counseling program, and then have the option of specializing in addictions? I’d appreciate any thoughts or ideas. thanks

I’d speak to your guidance counselor about your prospective career goals. But, most psychology majors should expect to go on to more schooling once they graduate college. I am also a psychology major, and it is hard to find many jobs without a masters (at least) . I would look into counseling psychology- and take some classes on drug addiction or drugs in general. You could even take some electives now in college. I’m sure if you have a school of health, you will see some classes dealing with drugs/alcohol.
Along with your schooling, please, check out open meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous Meetings, Al-non and the like. These fellowships help those substance addicted individuals through the basic nuts and bolts of our existence. I believe getting an inside view of these groups will help you understand us better on a grass roots level. These are not programs for those who need them, they are programs for those who want them. Thank you.
My sister-in-law is an adolescent additions counselor in a facility. She didn’t go to grad school at all. She has her 2 year degree & a GREAT state job.
Just something to think about. You may not need to go back to school, unless you want to.
You are on the right track….Go and get your Masters. My husband is a Drug/Alcohol Counselor II. He is now going to school to become an LCSW.
He only has his AA and you can only go so far in the field and with the pay on that amount of schooling. He is does a variety of duties in his job. He is their counselor, parent, motivator, cheerleader, disciplinarian, court advocate, and yes, sometimes friend. You have to have a love of people first and foremost. If you love helping people and finding out the why’s of their choices and the downfalls of addiction, then this is the career for you. Good Luck and go all the way with it!!
