Do You Believe the Term “depression” Is Too Broad?
by Ed Yourdon
Question by Mog123: Do you believe the term “depression” is too broad?
I think so. It seems as if nowadays, more people are depressed than ever. One reason for this is because i think the actual definition of depression is blurred. I’ve gathered there are two kinds: situational and chemical. One natural, one abnormal. Obviously, it is completely natural to feel depressed after a break up, the death of a loved one, or job loss. However, because these feelings are normal, I don’t believe they should be categorized with chemical depression, which is a purely medical result. I think the terms “ill” “diseased” and “abnormal” are serious terms. Unfortunately though, because depression is really just clumped under one umbrella, one must automatically assume that ALL people facing depression are somehow mentally ill… Though, that would make such an “illness” as common as the cold. I’ve also noticed that no one talks about the difference between being depressed continuously and feeling depressed in an isolated situation
I don’t know. This constant branding of “mental illness” on everyone nowadays makes me uneasy. What are your thoughts on this dilemma? Obviously I’m not saying that one form of depression is more severe or painful than the other. I’m merely speculating what they mean in regards to labels
Obviously both variations involve the brain. Yet, this doesn’t mean that both are purely chemical. The brain causes all feelings of depression; emotion IS the function of the brain. The chemical implication merely means that the depression is inborn, and not perpetrated by an outside event

I agree. It’s important to note too that there is a big difference between clinical depression and sadness that is labelled as depression. SO many people on Y!A think they are “depressed” but really it sounds more like they are experiencing a natural reaction to crappy events in their lives.
I agree we need to be careful labelling people with mental illnesses since there are a lot of implications. It’s a messy thing for sure.
