Is one the right one, do both work the same, or is it a context thing?

I don’t think there is a lot of clarity on this issue; certainly among admission professionals, there are those in both camps.
For example, “The National Association for College Admission Counseling” does not use the “s”, but the “American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers” does.
From a gramatical perspective, if you are talking about one individual, you would be talking about his or her “admission” to the institution (no “s”). If you were talking about a group, it becomes less clear, and one could likely argue either case.
From a personal perspective, I tend to use “admission” whenever possible.
