What to Do With My 3-Year-Old Cairn Terrier?

Question by ropman1: What to do with my 3-year-old Cairn Terrier?
My dog bites and growls at my wife – has caused bleeding at times. We are expecting our first child in November, and are afraid that he could do that to the kid. A “dog therapist” met with the dog over the weekend and feels the only 2 options are to re-home or euthanize.
I personally don’t want to get rid of him, but I don’t have a choice if I want to stay married. We know that the no-kill animal shelters aren’t that great because they eventually run out of room or lack enough resources to properly care for him.
We are sure that we would be able to give him to another family since he bites if he is disturbed.
There are supposedly facilities that will “house” your dog as long as you continue to pay for all fees – food, vet, etc. Does anyone know of any good places? I only want the best for him.

Thanks!
No, he hasn’t killed anyone! He has only seriously bitten my wife (and her friend) 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years. It occurs when they try to take his rawhide away or startle him when he is asleep.

He never does this to me. I am able to take the rawhide from him.

My wife scolds him and disciplines him more than I do – that might be why I can get away without a bite.

Boarding him for the rest of his life isn’t a humane idea..
Check for Cairn Terrier rescue in your area.. They will work with the dog and correct those things that you have allowed to happen.

If it was me, I would work with the dog, but If I were you, I would bring in a better qualified trainer and see what he says.. Rehome or euthanize.. Has the dog killed anyone? What kind of person is your wife.. Very soft and afraid to say NO? If yeah then rehome.. Euthanizing a dog for problems you have created isn’t fair.. Finding someone to fix those problems is fair.
