Can a Sophomore in HS Student Homeschool Herself in NC?
Question by ?Asylum???Suicide?: Can a Sophomore in HS student homeschool herself in NC?
I really can’t stand school. School is N O T for everyone, and it is definitely not for me. I want to be homeschooled. I live in North Carolina, and I know the laws in NC. I’ve read homeschooling sites and my state says homeschooling is legal in NC. The problem is my mother works as a single parent and CANNOT AFFORD A TUTOR! At all. We have no one else to homeschool me. There is just no way. I want to homeschool myself. What step should MY MOTHER OR I TAKE to be certified for homeschooling. I already have handled where I am getting the supplies. Now I need to know what step we should take. Will she have to take a teacher test or what? Can I even homeschool myself in NC? I’m desperate. I HATE THE HELL out of school I am trying mnit to make this a little suicice sob story but its either homeschooling or dying. And do not give me “get counseling” bullsh(+.
Thanks in advance! 🙂

Well, I don’t know what the laws are in NC, however, I feel I should point out that once students reach high school, the parents do not generally step in quite so much to teach. They are always there for questions, help, and when a new concept is being introduced to get the ball rolling, but much of homeschooled high-school is often done on their own. Students at that age have progressed generally to a point where they can learn without constant guidance. So this is definitely doable with a single working parent. As long as she is there for you before or after work to show assignments, goals, answer questions, and introduce topics, this is doable. There is generally little need to bring a tutor in. Check in your area there are probably some homeschooling groups that you can share a tutor with. Often times a parent will for example call in a spanish tutor, and that tutor will actually teach a classroom size of homeschooled students. Definitely look into what exactly the law in your state is. Some states require yearly standardized tests which you would have to visit a proctor for, or your parent would be forced to set aside time to give you. Be warned though, that taking on something so big as your high school education, mostly on your own, with having never done this before will actually require a LOT of discipline.
