Question by Jarklor: Should I practice writing short stories before I wrote a novel?
Writing a long novel with great quality can be a daunting task. What if after all the time you worked on it and it ended up not being good? Would writing many short storied first be a good idea before diving into novel writing?
I have a dream to write a novel or a graphic novel/manga. I feel like the idea I mapped out seems good. It’s fantasy but it’s unlike any other novel.
My fantasy novel is more based on characters and an emotional plot rather than violence and terror. It might be a little too different than lord of the rings for example.
I based it off a world discovered by NASA- Zarmina’s world. I altered the name to Zarminia. It starts off with this boy whom lives there and is training to become a fighter in the legion. This boy lives under the command of a newly formed nation and his father. Before he begins a practice battle between other competitors he prays that he’ll do well and win the companionship of his dad. Zain is his name.
Upon reaching the battle grounds, Zain gets greeted by fierce combatants. The clock ticks from 30 to 0. The battle for his life begins. (I’ll skip the fight for now)
To him, Zain felt like he won 2nd place. For his father, it looked like he loosed to 2nd. Zain walks shyly to his dad’s angry eyes for he admitted failure. “Why do you have to make me feel embraced? And I thought you were my son!” His father said. His father then dragged Zain and locked him up in a cell. (I’m not sure if it should be a cell, a tower, or something else.)
Zain pushed himself into a corner and clutched his legs. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be a good enough of a son. I’m afraid…” In the darkness of the space, the sobs Zain created, and the loss of hope, there was a voice, “I’m afraid too.”
Zain looks up and notices a small figure. An anthro dragon. (I don’t have room to add details but they eventually escape and go to the dragon nation. Zain learns that he truely amazing and that he’s special. He also meets friends whom travel in his stride.
The second half of the book features a rising conflict: the battle between the legion and the dragon nation. Zain also had his named changed and starts becoming one of the people. The dragons in this book are short standing at 4.5 feet with wings and a draping tail. They look kinda like my profile pic.

I didn’t realky read your story, but all of the great writers started on short stories and/or poems, so yes.
