What Kind of Psychologist Do I Need to See?
Question by John: What kind of psychologist do I need to see?
For psychology, we were given an assignment. Here is the assignment, “Each student has been given a “situation”, “disorder,” or a small problem when you attended class today. For the first part of this assignment you are to seek counseling from a Psychologist to assist you with your particular situation. In your paragraph, make sure you write about what type of Psychologist you would seek, what approach would they use to assist you with your situation, and how would they help you using that approach.” My disorder is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Care to help?
This is for a college course.

First I have a question about your class. Is this assignment for a High School psych class? Collage or grad school psych class?
You would first want to see a ‘Clinical Psychologist.’ They are typically trained using the Medical Model, IE; OCD would be viewed as an illness to be treated versus say a disorder originating from early relationships. You would see a Counseling or Family Psychologist if you wanted to treat how your OCD affects your “relationships.” A Clinical Psychologist would treat Mood and Behavioral Disorders from a clinical framework, a referral for a medical/psychiatric evaluation would be a priority. Medication and behavior therapy would be a likely first approach versus “talk therapy” to treat the “symptoms.” Good luck. That’s a good assignment.
