Why Are Republicans Always Against That Which Helps Most of Us?
Question by Kilroy Roboto: Why are Republicans always against that which helps most of us?
In 1935 99% percent of Republican in the House voted against Presidet Roosevelt’s Social Security plan. In fact, in that year’s presidential election they campaigned against it. Their fear-mongering tactics included suggesting that citizens would lose their names and their names would be replaced with “New Deal numbers” and they would have to wear metal dog tags. The SS bill passed anyway.
Along the way and in years to come, Republicans tried to end SS in many ways including stopping the funding of the program. “Give ’em Hell Harry” beat them on every move. While the Repblicans proclaimed their representation of “the people”, they predicted a close election, and a probable win. They could not have been more wrong. Roosevelt won by the largest margin since Washington’s.
In a speech, Roosevelt said, ““never before in all history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me, and I welcome their hatred. I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match.”
In his quest of Health Care Reform, I believe President Obama should take the same stand. Republican have NEVER supported anything remotely sounding like socialized government because they are ALWAYS standing with business. Also, the Deomocrats don’t need them since they have control. In my opinion, President Obama should plow through, and forget trying to get bipartisan support for his plans; after all, the only thing the Republicans are doing is watering down his plans and then voting against them anyhow.
