According to Wisconsin code, a professional counselor requires a license. One may not call themselves a counselor without a license. A “Christian” counselor would be a subset of the professions “Counselor” or “Pastor.” “Christian Counselor” would fall under the caveat in the civil code as “or other similar title,” which still requires a license and many hours of supervision. Below are the law and the State Website.

That caveat is there so someone cannot think up some other kind of name for the job Counselor and stick up a shingle like any old quack without training, licensing or experience.

James – Wicca, don’t leave home without it.

Here is a reprint of the Wisconsin code:

Professional Counselor
Administrative Code (Code Book)

Individuals who wish to practice professional counseling or who wish to use the title “professional counselor” must be licensed as a professional counselor or hold a temporary license or professional counselor training certificate, pursuant to s. 457.04(6) and s. 457.13 of the Wisconsin Statues. This requirement applies to those individuals who are accruing their 3,000 hours of post-graduate supervised practice, a necessity for licensure.

Professional counseling means applying a combination of human development, rehabilitation and either psychosocial or psychotherapeutic principles, procedures or services that integrate a wellness, pathology and multicultural model of human behavior in order to assist an individual, couple, family, group of individuals, organization, institution or community to achieve mental, emotional, physical, social, moral, educational, spiritual, vocational or career development and adjustment through the life span of the individual, couple, family, group of individuals, organization, institution or community.

No person may practice professional counseling or use the title “professional counselor”, “professional rehabilitation counselor”, “vocational rehabilitation counselor”, or “rehabilitation counselor” or any similar title unless the person is licensed as a professional counselor by the Professional Counselor Section of the examining board.
