Do Voc Rehab Counselors Make an Impact on #disability Claim Outcomes? Work.Love.Play.Daily 36 #hr – This post is written in follow-up to my HR Executive (client) benefits column: Selling the Problem of Absence (bit.ly Cherie King asked if I would do a follow-up video blog to a video post I sent out last week called, Do Nurses Make an Impact on Disability Claim Outcomes? Cherie is an expert on vocational rehab counseling and I hope to convince her to post about this topic as well. Vocational rehabilitation counselors (VRC) play an important role in disability claim management. Historically, they were almost exclusively involved with long-term disability (LTD) claim management. They spent the majority of their time either helping employees/claimants return to work / find a new career, or assisting claim examiners with the determination of whether the employee/claimant met the new definition of disability – any occupation (any occ). The any occ definition usually comes into effect after a person has been receiving LTD benefits for 24 months. About 10 to 15 years ago, disability carriers experimented with having VRCs become involved with disability claim management during the short-term disability (STD) claim. The theory was that VRCs are the most skilled claim team members at assessing and requesting accommodations so that the employee could return to work sooner. The results of these experiments were impressive early on.
