I Need Help Coping With the Loss of All My Major Dreams?
Question by Metoo: I Need Help Coping with the Loss of All My Major Dreams?
My life has been more than difficult lately. I lost my job (after trauma/abuse starting my career as a teacher), my fiancee who has been with me since we were practically kids just let me; and I was diaganosed with an ongoing illness (that is not terminal and can be controlled with medication, but it is still upsetting because it makes it difficult for me to be able to have children). I feel like all of my dreams are shattered (my dream of marrying my partner, having kids, teaching). I’m living at home, don’t have a car, and feel useless.
I’ll be going away in a few days to stay with my dad in another city, but after that I don’t know what to do. I’ve been looking for jobs for months and have been working part time as a substitute teacher, which I am very miserable doing and just can’t face anymore.
I don’t know where to start to pick up my life. I’ve started praying, but other than that, what can I do? I want to work again but I’m afraid I won’t be very good around people right now since I am severely depressed. At work, they expect you to force a happy face and be chipper, when I feel severe sadness and pain inside that only gets worse when I fake it. I’ve been to counseling but am told to “change my thoughts” etc., which may be helpful in some cases but with all the grief and broken dreams I’ve had come at me recently, I just don’t think “changing my thoughts” is a very therepeutic solution.
Can anyone relate? Did you ever lose something or someone important and feel all alone and stuck? Please tell me what you or someone you know did to help yourself get better. Please don’t tell me to “just get a job” or “buck up” unless you have some serious suggestions about what I can do for a job while I’m in this almost non-functional state. Thank you.

First, let me guess, hypothyroidism?
You sound like me a year ago. My husband and I both lost our jobs, I found our I was hypothyroid, and everything just seemed overwhelmingly depressing. I am so sorry you are going through this.
I have to say that you need to get your thyroid regulated. Once it is, having children should be just as easy as if you didn’t have it. That statistic is mostly based off the people who are not treated. So stay positive. Find a hobby that can distract you from thinking about these issues. Because chances are you will find a job you love and you will be okay 🙂 Time is the true healer. And above all else, praying to our Lord Jesus for his guidance. I hope that helps. God bless you.
