Independence Day 2012

Independence Day 2012 – timeofgrace.org Accompanying Devotion: All over the United States this week, fireworks worth millions of dollars will be blown up, delighting crowds with intensely colored, fiery streaks in the sky and booming explosions. Everyone loves the finale most of all—a rapid-fire cannonade with searing white flashes that light up the night. Well, not quite everyone. Milwaukee is home to the VA, the Veterans’ Administration, which provides health care services, including psychiatric counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder, to veterans. Next door is one of only four national cemeteries for Civil War dead, and the ancient grave markers flow like rhythmic marble Chiclets up and down hills just west of Miller Park. Our VA workers report that some of the vets who made it back from Iraq or Afghanistan get the cold sweats when they hear the sound of fireworks. The whump of exploding shells sounds way too much like a mortar attack and brings back the nightmares. Some hide in their basements on July 3rd and 4th; others leave town or go camping to get away. Can you blame them? American troops have been in active combat in Iraq and Afghanistan for over ten years, and some of the troops have served two or three multiyear deployments. The strain of constant alertness to sniper attack, roadside IEDs, and mortar fire takes an emotional as well as physical toll. Did you know that on average one returning vet kills himself each day in America? We have a lot of work to do to restore these
